It has been one year since the introduction of the Remain in Mexico Policy (formally “Migrant Protection Protocols” (MPP)) and tens of thousands of people in need of protection continue to be sent back to dangerous cities along the Mexican border to await their US court hearings, leaving them vulnerable to targeted attacks, kidnappings, and extortion by criminal groups.

Since it was implemented in January 2019, approximately 60,000 people have been returned to Mexico due to MPP. MSF works along the migration route in Mexico and at border locations in Nuevo Laredo, Matamoros, Mexicali, and Reynosa, and witnesses the devastating humanitarian consequences of MPP and new rules that have essentially ended asylum at the US southern border.
