Following the declaration of an Ebola disease outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on 15 May 2026, more than 95 per cent of confirmed cases have been reported in Ituri Province. Since the start of the outbreak, only three confirmed cases have been detected in South Kivu with some more in North Kivu, all linked to travel from or contact with people from affected areas. Despite the low number of cases in the Kivu provinces, prevention, preparedness and rapid isolation remain essential to contain transmission and ensure teams are ready should the outbreak spread further south.

To support the response, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has established Ebola Treatment Centres (ETCs) in Goma and Butembo, with another under construction in Beni, in North Kivu. In South Kivu, MSF operates a 35-bed ETC in Lwiro and a 16-bed ETC in Bukavu. As of 26 June 2026, MSF had treated 33 patients across the two centres in South Kivu, with two confirmed Ebola patients successfully discharged from the Lwiro ETC. Health awareness and community engagement remain key pillars of the intervention as well.
