Advanced HIV management in Homa Bay

HIV / AIDS is a major problem in Kenya. In an attempt to address this endemic epidemic, Epicenter / MSF conducted a survey in 2012 of the population of Ndhiwa, in the Nyanza region. It was found that adult prevalence was 24.1% and that the incidence of pathology in the country was one of the highest in the world, reaching 2%. In addition, two out of every hundred people are diagnosed with HIV every year.

A new epicenter study conducted between December 2014 and March 2015 at the adult referral hospital in Homa Bay revealed that HIV / AIDS accounted for nearly one-third of adult admissions and 55% of deaths. Most worryingly, 50% of patients with AIDS were former patients whose treatment had failed.

Faced with this, a project was opened in 2014 in Ndhiwa County to control the epidemic, reduce incidence and reduce mortality in the internal medicine department of the Homa Bay referral hospital.

In collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the communities, MSF carries out screening activities, voluntary male medical circumcision, prevention of the risks of mother-to-child transmission, follow-up of antiretroviral cohorts, and Secondary care for HIV-positive patients.

In 2016, 19,700 people were screened and nearly 14,500 people were placed on antiretroviral therapy in Ndhiwa. In addition, more than 4,300 people were admitted to the Ndhiwa center supported by MSF and the hospital in Homa Bay.
