On Monday 18 July an MSF team made a first exploratory mission to Banki in Nigeria, near the border with Cameroon. Banki has been taken over from Boko Haram on October 2015 by the Nigerian military. Since then, people have been unable to leave.
There are between 17,000-20,000 people living in the town, a majority of children women and elderly people, with little access to food and water. Malnutrition is a major concern.
MSF plans to carry out a nutritional screening and support for children suffering severe acute malnutrition (SAM) with ready to use therapeutic food (RUTF). Our medical team will also distribute food support for families.
A measles vaccination will be organized for children and mobile clinics will provide access to primary health care, with medical consultation.
