Many of the health facilities inside Mosul, both east and west, have been damaged or destroyed during fighting or airstrikes. The medics working within were either forced to flee, abandon their posts or chose to run small private clinics in their own homes or in those of their patients. Those working for MSF in Mosul tell us that inside the besieged zone still occupied by IS, there are only two hospitals operating, and that they too are running with extremely low numbers of staff and poor supplies of medical equipment and drugs.

These photos are of hospitals destroyed on the east side of Mosul, near where MSF is currently running operations and where life is in many ways returning to the streets. Those who fled fighting in late 2016 are now returning to the homes they fled and the city is well and truly teaming with life, The health system however will take a long time to recover given the damaged facilities and the number of staff who have fled elsewhere in Iraq or abroad.
