The mines on South Africa’s platinum belt have magnetized men and women from across the region, but many end up living in bleak unplanned settlements in which violence – particularly sexual violence perpetrated by men against women – has become normalized. A survey conducted by MSF in 2015 found that 1 in 4 women living on the outskirts of Rustenburg has been rape in their lifetime. MSF has been working with the North West Provincial DoH since 2015 to capacitate designated facilities as ‘Kgomotso Care Centres’ (KCC), providing a complete essential package of medical and clinical forensic services to survivors of sexual violence. In October 2017 South African documentary photographer Oupa Nkosi attempted to limn the reality of life on the platinum belt for survivors of sexual violence, taking in, additionally, the many contexts of MSF staff and their partners in government departments and community organizations.
