Neonatal care in Khamer hospital, Amran governorate

In Amran governorate, MSF is supporting Al Salam hospital in Khamer (ER, maternity, neonat, isolation, IPD, OPD, OT, blood bank) and Huth health centre (ER, paediatric ward, maternity, isolation). In Al Salam hospital, the neonatal ward has a 19-bed capacity, it’s usually working at full capacity. An average of 2 to 3 newborn babies are admitted every day. Main pathologies are respiratory sepsis, asphyxia and malnutrition. Newborn babies are usually brought to this hospital after home deliveries, they often arrive late, which reduces their chance of survival. The neonatal unit is located next to the maternity, with around 250 deliveries a month.
In 2018, 27,000 emergency consultations were provided at Al Salam hospital. In the same year, around 1,000 newborn were admitted in the neonatal ward, with a mortality rate near 20%.
