MSF TB-MDR patients and Green House photos in Mathare
In the Eastlands suburbs of Nairobi, MSF provides medical care to patients with tuberculosis and drug resistant tuberculosis. The clinic, called Green house, is located near Mathare, one of the biggest slums of Nairobi, with more than 200 000 inhabitants. *** Local Caption *** “In April 2014, the medical team was following 260 cases of TB patients and 51 people suffering from multi resistant drug tuberculosis (MDR-TB). The MDR cohort, is the biggest cohort of patients treated in Nairobi and the 2nd one in Kenya”, explains Corinne Torré, Field Coordinator in Eastlands. Each month, two to three new cases are admitted for treatment in Green house clinic. In early 2014, MSF put a first patient on “compassionate” treatment with new Bedaquiline drug. This procedure, allows a pharmaceutical company to provide a drug to physicians for treating patients who have no other therapeutic alternative. As per WHO global tuberculosis report 2013, Kenya is ranking 10th in the list of the 22 high burden countries in the world and 3rd in Africa with prevalence and incidence.
