World TB Day: Sierra Leone - First Country on Revolutionary Treatment Available to Patients with DR-TB

MSF has been supporting the Ministry of Health and Sanitation in Makeni Regional hospital with the diagnosis and treatment of DR-TB since 2019. The MSF TB centre screens and diagnoses patients with DR-TB. Patients were placed on the 9-month or the 18-month regimens.

In October 2022, MSF together with National Leprosy and Tuberculosis Control Program (NLTCP) started introducing the BPaLM regimens, a WHO-recommended, six-month long all-oral treatment for DR-TB. With the new regimen, patients are taking less medicines, have fewer side effects and are treated within a much shorter time.
