On 24 August in international waters off the Libyan coast, a patrol boat of Libyan Coast Guard (LCG) opened fire, for 20 minutes, on the Ocean Viking of the NGO SOS MEDITERRANEE. On board of the rescue vessel were 34 crew members and 87 survivors rescued from distress at sea. The assailant was identified by the NGO as one of two “Corrubia class” vessels among five boats donated in 2023 by the Italian government, with funding of the European Union’s Support to Integrated Border and Migration Management in Libya (SIBMMIL) project. This attack is the climax of a series of increasingly frequent violent assaults by the Libyan Coast Guard against people attempting to flee across the Mediterranean and rescue crews, carried out with the complicity of the European Union – and left unpunished.
