In Democratic Republic of Congo in 2023, MSF teams treated 25,166 victims of sexual violence

North Kivu province:
Here, clashes between M23, the Congolese army and allied groups have raged since late 2021, driving hundreds of thousands of civilians to flee to camps, where they are living in deplorable conditions.

Women and girls are attacked as they go looking for food, water or income. In 2/3 of cases, these attacks are carried out by armed men.

"I was looking for wood in Virunga National Park, when I came across two men. Both were dressed like soldiers, and one was holding a gun… They raped me, one after the other.] On the way back, I confided in the woman who was hosting me in the site. She told me about the MSF clinic and advised me to go there to avoid contracting a disease or becoming pregnant" Therese, 39

Victims of sexual violence were treated in 17 MSF projects across 5 provinces of DRC

Treatment of injuries and STIs
Emergency contraceptives
Antiretroviral preventive treatment against HIV
Vaccinations against hepatits B and tetanus
psychosocial support and long-term follow-up

This must stop now.
Urgent action is needed to step up prevention of this phenomenon and care for survivors.
MSF calls for a rapid and significant increase in humanitarian aid to the region and greater efforts to protect the population.
