Cyclone Chido hit Mayotte island on December 14, 2024, causing significant loss of life and damage. Médecins Sans Frontières is currently putting together a team that will travel to Mayotte to assess needs as soon as a move is possible. Initial reports indicate that the situation on the island is very serious, with water and electricity supplies cut off, roads severely damaged, communication difficulties and an already serious human toll, the true extent of which remains uncertain. The island's shantytowns have been destroyed and their inhabitants are particularly vulnerable; their living conditions prior to the cyclone were already extremely precarious. Between May and August 2024, MSF teams responded to a cholera epidemic, and worked to improve access to water, hygiene and sanitation; they also supported local associations in health promotion concerning diarrheal diseases and cholera.
