Greece: State Inaction Turns Into State Abuse

More than 7000 migrants have arrived onto the Greek island of Kos over the month of July, a two-fold increase compared to June. In the absence of proper reception facilities, most have taken to put up tents in Kos town, without any access to latrines and showers. Food has not been provided since April.
Over the course of the past two days, the police have been conducting operations to evict people from the public areas, directing them to go and stay in a stadium that offers no hygiene facilities and no shelter. On August 11, around 2000 people are staying in the stadium, among them many families with babies and small children, waiting for an opportunity to give their name to the police in the hope of being registered.
