Far from the cameras, a humanitarian crisis is ongoing in the Southern part of North Kivu province, in the territories of Masisi, Walikale and Rutshuru.

Known as the "Little North", this region is plagued by constant armed conflict, violence and displacement. In recent months, the intensification of fighting and the movement of armed men has aggravated this already difficult context. Tens of thousands of families are displaced and live in overcrowded camps or in host families. The high level of insecurity makes any displacement in the fields or health centers risky, further aggravating the food, health and economic situation of families. The entire population suffers from a disturbing level of sexual and armed violence, malnutrition, but also malaria and diseases related to lack of sanitation facilities.
In Masisi health zone – part of the Masisi territory – MSF fully supports two health centers (Masisi and Nyiabiondo) and manages the Masisi General Reference Hospital (GRH). MSF teams also provide outreach support to 9 health centers and health posts, and intervene in IDP camps in Bushani, Bukombo, Katale and Kalinga through medical and WASH activities.

The testimonies and pictures below were taken in the morning of July 19, 2019 at the Masisi GRH. We follow our colleague Elliot Safari, surgery and internal medicine supervisor, during his medical round. By meeting these patients and listening to their stories, we get a glimpse of the main issues that people face in the Masisi area – and the whole ‘Little North’ region: children suffering from malnutrition, victims of shotguns, displaced people… An ongoing humanitarian crisis largely forgotten by public opinion and, unfortunately, by humanitarian actors.
