North Kivu: over one million displaced people face appalling conditions

Médecins Sans Frontières is calling on the international community and authorities to urgently step up their efforts to respond to the needs of the population in North Kivu. Over the past 12 months, more than one million people have fled the fighting resulting from the resurgence of armed group M23 that has triggered a “disaster within a disaster” in the east of the DRC. Displaced people as well as entire communities left isolated by the fighting are in a critical health situation, with cases of measles and cholera increasingly common in several of the sites where the displaced are sheltering. In light of the current context, the response is wholly inadequate in North Kivu.
