IRAQ – The “Behind the scenes” humanitarians

Over the years, when communicating in and about Iraq, MSF has often put forward expatriate and/or medical staff to talk about or show its activities. However, this does not always represent accurately the way that the organization works in Iraq and other countries. The clear majority of MSF staff in Iraq are national staff and an important number of them do not carry out medical functions. To give a more accurate picture of humanitarian organizations to the population in Iraq and overall in the region, we worked on this photo-documentary, intending to highlight and to insist on the importance of the work of national, non-medical staff in the country. The idea is to challenge an overall perception of what humanitarian workers “are”, taking the example of one country (Iraq) and one organization (MSF) in the region. With this project, we want to show that MSF could not function properly without the work of the national staff and non-medical staff in the country.
