The extremely rapid deterioration in the security situation of the past two years has plunged Burkina Faso into an unprecedented crisis. In the worst affected areas, violence is on daily basis and humanitarian needs are huge, while aid response still quite limited. At the end of 2018, close to 48,000 people were internally displaced. By the end of 2019, they were 560,000 and now their numbers rose to over 780,000. Some forecasts indicate that within the next few months one million people may be displaced. There are 131,000 displaced people in Djibo, 80,000 displaced people in Kaya and 65,000 in Barsalogho.

In 2019, MSF already scaled up the level of activities in the overall country and are present as of today in Djibo, Gorom-Gorom, Titao, Ouindigui, Barsalogho, Fada N’Gourma, Nagare, Matiacoali and Gayeri, to provide access to basic and secondary healthcare. We are also running WASH activities, NFI distributions, etc. Much more needs to be done as it becomes clear that the upcoming seasonal peaks (malaria and malnutrition) will make the situation even more critical for populations who are already vulnerable, including young children.
