While migration along Mexico’s southern border has sharply declined under the Trump administration—reaching its lowest levels in over 50 years according to official U.S. Border Patrol data—in the first quarter of the year, MSF teams have observed a significant arrival of Haitian migrants. With 6.4 million people in need of urgent humanitarian assistance, thousands seek refuge in Mexico, only to encounter Tapachula’s “double blockade”: endless bureaucratic waiting times before the Mexican Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR), and the lack of access to the Unique Population Registry Code (CURP), which prevents them from working and affording housing. Over the course of the year, MSF team has on three occasions provided care to dozens of migrants traveling in so-called “caravans”—groups of migrant populations that organize to move toward Mexico’s northern border, often on foot and under precarious conditions. The communication highlights testimonies from Lemeus, Malaika, and Yosimar, three people from Haiti fleeing violence and crisis. Their journey reflects a shift from reaching the northern border to seeking safety, work, and dignity in Mexican cities. By portraying daily life within the caravan, the narrative reframes group migration as a necessity rather than a choice. It reveals ongoing humanitarian needs despite changing migration policies and limited safe alternatives.
