In April 2018, MSF opened a comprehensive post-operative care facility in East Mosul (Iraq) to provide services for people injured by violent or accidental trauma. There, MSF teams provide specialized healthcare, surgical procedures, rehabilitation and mental health care to patients suffering from injuries with complications, open wounds, amputations or osteomyelitis. This MSF hospital is one of the only facilities in the country that provides optimized antimicrobial therapy to patients affected by antibiotic-resistance. To facilitate their recovery and prevent the spread of infections, these patients usually stay in isolation rooms. When the hospital opened, back in April 2018, there were only 3 isolation rooms in the facility. MSF teams soon found out it was not enough, as over a third of the patients admitted at the facility in the first months after the opening presented some sort of anti-biotic resistance. MSF is currently building 40 new isolation rooms, to accommodate these patients.
