My name is Rukaya, I'm a a nurse supervisor at MSF, Maigurguri, Borno State Nigeria. This is inpatient therapeutic feeding centre here in Maiduguri, Borno State where we treat children suffering from severe acute malnutrition under 5 years old. Most of them are affected by the conflict here in the northern part of the country.

As you can see, this is our emergency room where all patients that come to the facility have to pass through. The patients are categorised into either red cases or yellow cases. Those that are red cases are usually admitted into the intensive care unit.

This is the intensive care unit. We have 18-bed capacity and a resuscitation bay. The patients here are mostly red cases, that is to say they are in severe respiratory distress, hyper-glycaemia or hypo-glycaemia with dehydration. The majority of the patients here spend 3 to 5 days depending on the outcome of their treatment. The patients here are mostly on intranasal oxygen and nasal-gastric tubes because the majority of them are in either in respiratory distress or they cannot tolerate orally.
Onscreen text : INTENSIVE CARE UNIT – AROUND 60 CHILDREN ARE TREATED IN THE INPATIENT FACILITY EVERY WEEK
This is the acute phase of the treatment for malnutrition where patients who are a bit stable compared to those in the intensive care unit. The patients here do not have intranasal oxygen. most of them are aso being tested for plumpy nut. If the plumpy nut test is positive, then the patients are moved into the other phase of the treatment known as the transition phase.

This is the transition phase where the patients after passing through the acute phase come. The patients mostly spend between one to three days. If they tolerate their Plumpynut test, the patients are discharged home. The patients here also do not have intravenous fluid and are not on oxygen therapy.
Onscreen text : AMBULATORY THERAPEUTIC FEEDING CENTRE – AROUND 700 CHILDREN ARE ENROLLED IN THE GWANGE OUTPATIENT PROGRAMME
This is our ambulatory therapteutic feeding centre. Patients are stable to be treated as oupatients are admitted here. The majority of them are on Plumpynut. At the transition phase we give them two weeks. After completing, they come here for their return follow-up and immunistation.
