Kasai region was transformed in one of the most serious humanitarian crises in the world today. It started in August 2016 as a spark – the killing of a local chief by the Congolese armed forces – but it became a generalized unrest flaring through an area as large as Italy.

MSF has been supporting, since April 2017, the Provincial Hospita in Kananga, the capital of Kasai Central province. Here the team created a temporary operating theatre and has been managing the 70 beds trauma wing, offering free care for victims of violent and accidental trauma.

The progressive reduction in affluence of conflict- affected patients to Kananga Provincial Hospital led MSF (OCB) team to reconvert the core activities towards areas in the province where needs are more urgent and to refocus activities towards assisting victims of sexual violence.
