Hi I am Meti, Communications Officer at Doctors Without Borders or MSF.
I'm here to tell you that today in Ethiopia, MSF together with the Ministry of Health are implementing a new approach called CATI, to interrupt the chain of disease transmission for cholera based on the proximity of the patient's home. It is an innovative community-based strategy and is effective in reducing the number of patients and deaths and the duration of the outbreak. It is still on the testing phase in Ethiopia but it has shown promise in other countries such as Democratic Republic of Congo and Haiti.
In November we launched a full cholera response in Jijiga city that included case management, treatment, vaccination, health promotion, water and sanitation and infection prevention control.
Through this new approach, we have treated more than 800 patients, vaccinated almost 6,000 people and reached out to around 1,300 households with hygiene kits.
