(Name) Fatima Ismail, MSF Psychologist from El Geneina, West Darfur, Sudan.

Like more than 600 000 people, Fatima fled the heavy fighting that erupted in Sudan in April 2023 and sought refuge in neighboring Chad.

Fatima graduated in clinical psychology in Khartoum and she joined MSF in 2021 as a psychologist and mental health supervisor in the MSF-supported El Geneina's Teaching Hospital, in Darfur region.

She arrived in Adré on June 5th, 2023.

My family, at the beginning, they refused to come to Adré, because they said maybe, tomorrow everything, it will be better. But every day, the circumstances, it became so bad, these, a lot of the people killed, there's a lot of the girls raped.

In Adré, along with general healthcare, MSF teams provide psychological support, including for survivors of sexual violence.

FATIMA
The patients they came to us, they explain that they have mental health problems after the conflict that started in Sudan. Some of them were exposed to violence, sexual violence, physical violence, and even they witnessed killing.

As we are psychologists, we have our own way to deal with this problem. For my side, I have some practice technique that I do every day. Like support, like meditation, like relaxation

From January to June 2024, MSF teams received 583 people for mental health consultations in Adré. Fatima hopes to advance within MSF and to open a psychiatric hospital in Sudan when she returns one day.
