Rohingya six years: Leaving a trace for the future

In June 2023, MSF Australia together with a social designer and the MSF Bangladesh mission worked in collaboration with two Rohingya weavers, a storyteller, and young people in the Cox’s Bazar camps to create a story-panel for young Rohingya patients in MSF's care.

This story-panel, and the process of its making, drew upon a Rohingya kyssa (folktale) and created an opportunity for MSF and the Rohingya community to together mark 25 August—six years since their mass exodus from Myanmar—to practice and value Rohingya culture, and to create ongoing opportunities for bearing witness and for sharing culture, experiences and mental health discussions in the hospital.

The creative advocacy approach aims to explore the development of connections within Rohingya communities, with MSF and with international audiences that move beyond the typical narrative of Rohingya people as "vulnerable refugees” or "a crisis”. The method of creative practising, valuing and sharing of culture is a means through which Rohingya people may express their fundamental humanity and others may recognise their rights to safety, health and a future.
