Sicne 1997, MSF has been providing medical care in the
Abyei Special Administrative Area , a region claimed by both Sudan and South Sudan

Abyei is severely under-serviced and under-funded, while insecurity and access constraints make it difficult for aid organisations to mount a humanitarian response.

We live here but our lives are difficult. When someone is sick and cannot walk, we would carry them on a bed on our shoulders to Kuburi. We tried to use herbs for treatment, and when they work, there is no need to carry the patient, but when they do not work, we would take the patient to MSF, when MSF was in Aneet.

MSF operates 17 Integrated Community Case Management sites in Abyei's isolated regions, which are often inaccessible due to floods and violence

Each site is staffed by two volunteers trained by MSF.

Community VOLUNTEER - ABYEI

I have been trained on how to do all the malaria tests, how to do seasonal malaria prevention and diarrhoea treatment. The training I received from MSF has helped me assist my community.
I spend my time at my farm, when it is the other volunteer’s turn to replace me. But now the floods has destroyed everything.
I used to be in the farm weeding and cultivating, so when I am not here at the ICCM site, I am at my farm cultivating.

I’m happy when treating a patient. It gives me joy knowing that I have saved a life.
