On February 6, magnitude 7.8 and 7.6 earthquakes struck southeast Türkiye and resulted in 51.769 fatalities  - with over 100,000 injured people - and affected directly 9,1M people in country’s 11 provinces, with over 3M displaced. 210,000 buildings collapsed.

 

UN OCHA said that 5.2M people are in need of humanitarian assistance. As of 4 May, according to OCHA , 650 thousand households (some 2,6 million people) still live in tents, while over 157,000 people are accommodated in 85,500 containers.

 

Since the day one, MSF has been working with local NGOs and civil society organizations to respond to the needs that include mental health and psychosocial support, non-food items distributions and water and sanitation improvements. As of 1 May 2023, MSF-supported NGOs have distributed, donated and delivered: 96,6 tons of fruits and vegetables, 390,500 meals, 2,624,721 liters of water, 53,1 tons of firewood, one X-ray machine worth 60,000 EUR donated to the hospital in Kahramanmaraş, 21,004 coloring books for children, 11,831 jerrycans for water, 37,179 blankets, 61 water tanks, 312 toilets, 160 showers, 137 Wood stoves, 38,154 hygiene kits, 321 tents, 31 containers, while 7,668 people received psychosocial assistance.

 

All MSF relief activities in Türkiye are carried out by supporting local organisations, including: Imece Inisiyatifi, Yardım Konvoyu, Maya Vakfı and others. Since the early phase of the earthquakes response, these MSF-supported NGOs have been active in Adıyaman, Gaziantep, Hatay, Kahramanmaraş, Kilis, and Malatya provinces, delivering much needed aid and relief to the affected population.
