Snakebite identification with AI - Webclip ENG (SHORT)

Snakebites identification as quick as possible in the field could be a life saver for the communities, as snakebites envenoming is a deadly neglected tropical disease (NTD).
In a pilot project designed by MSF and the University of Geneva (UNIGE), Artificial Intelligence animal recognition software will help MSF teams who are not snake specialists to distinguish venomous snakes from common snakes and to improve antivenom to treat the patients.

Some snakes can mimic a venomous snake just to escape or to frighten the predator. But actually some machines can recognize the snake better than the best experts.
This tool has been fed with more than 380,000 photos already. It will help us to distinguish if the snake is venomous or non-venomous.

MSF teams have been treating about 7,000 patients affected by snakebite every year.

Some antivenoms are still not perfect in terms of affordability, in terms of safety, in terms of polyvalence. They don't cover all the snakes in the regions. It's technologically quite complex.
