MSF Japan’s General Director Shinjiro Murata calls on people to break silence on Rohingya crisis. Murata and MSF Japan’s team visited MSF projects in Myanmar, Bangladesh, Malaysia from late June to early July 2024 and spoke to Rohingya people.
The overwhelming majority— an estimated 99%— of all the Rohingya in the world are contained or marginalized by harmful policies that deny them basic human rights and self-determination. An unacceptable 39% live in fenced camps in Bangladesh and Myanmar. Rohingya people in Malaysia are not contained in camps but have no right to employment or education.
The fundamental containment and lack of freedom of the Rohingya profoundly impacts their physical and mental health and threatens their existence as a people. Medical activities in Rakhine State have been mostly suspended since repeated violence exploded again in November 2023. It has been highly difficult to deliver healthcare to those in need.
