I was very scared, and no one could see me. I was under the rubble. I could hear people screaming. I knew it was a bomb. I felt the rubble on my body. I couldn’t get up, I couldn’t move.
It was the hardest feeling ever, and to this day I can’t forget that I was under the rubble, awake, alive, and conscious, but unable to get up or move.

Deema, 11, and her family, were sheltering at their home in Gaza City when their neighbour’s house was hit by an Israeli airstrike on 10 October 2023.

Deema was on the fourth floor, holding her baby nephew in her arms, when the building collapsed around them. To this day, the baby’s body has not been recovered.

This hand was fine, my left hand. I started moving it until someone saw me and pulled me out. Then I was taken to the hospital, Al-Shifa Hospital.

The Israeli army entered Al-Shifa for the first time, and I couldn’t have surgery. So, my fracture healed, but it healed incorrectly.

Deema suffered fractures in her right femur and shoulder, as well as an open wound on her forehead.

In May 2024, Deema, was medically evacuated to Egypt and later to the MSF hospital in Amman, Jordan.

I have improved a lot. I couldn’t move my shoulder at all. But with physiotherapy, I can now move it and raise my hand up and down.

The war must stop, and we need to rebuild our house. We need a place to stay. A shelter where we can live and find refuge.

We want Gaza to return to how it was. I just want it to return to how it was. I miss my home, the safety. For us to be like we were before. No fear, no worries.

I want to continue my education, go back to school. Go to university, take my exams and succeed. I want to become an engineer.

In Amman, our teams are treating some of the few Gazan children who were evacuated from the Strip for medical care.

According to WHO, 14,000 people in Gaza need medical evacuation. So far, almost 60 per cent of the requests have been rejected by the Israeli authorities.

The Israeli authorities must facilitate medical evacuations from Gaza, while ensuring that patients and their caregivers are guaranteed a safe, voluntary and dignified return to Gaza.
