My name is Deng, I am a 45-year-old farmer and I live in a remote village in Abyei with my wife and my four children.

One evening, my son was bitten by a snake in the dark. I tried to react swiftly, killing the snake and using a razor blade to cut the bite area. It is a traditional method believed to draw out the snake's poison.

But after four days with no improvement, we decided to bring him to the hospital. We carried him to the main road where we waited for 4 hours until a car could take us, and we had to pay a hefty amount for it.

When we arrived at the hospital supported by MSF in Abyei, the doctor took care of my son. He underwent surgery and received comprehensive snakebite treatment. He had to stay 3 weeks in the hospital. If I had waited longer, my son might not have made it.

Today, Deng advocates in his community for prompt hospital visits for all snakebites. He explains the importance of clearing tall grasses during the rainy season, wearing gumboots for protection, and avoiding sleeping on the ground. He is trying that the community understands the necessity of seeking immediate medical attention in case of snakebites.
