South Kivu - Kalole : Too young to die

In Kalole, South Kivu, MSF intervenes to reduce the mortality rate among children under the age of 5. The health zone of Kalole in the territory of Shabunda, South Kivu, is not easily accessible. It takes at least five hours to reach this isolated area, which is only accessible by motorcycle. Most inhabitants travel on foot, sometimes for days at a time. In this territory, health structures are regularly confronted with shortages of medicines or a lack of human resources. In addition, due to a lack of financial means, most families find health care inaccessible.

However, the health zone of Kalole faces recurrent measles outbreaks, and malaria is endemic. The lack of nutritional diversity, necessary for the proper growth of young children, also exposes them to various diseases and makes this segment of the population particularly vulnerable.

Since May 2022, MSF has been working in the Kalole health zone to help reduce the mortality rate among children under the age of 5. Initially, nine health areas were involved. Gradually, the intervention was extended. MSF now provides support to half of the health centres in the area as well as to the general referral hospital in Kalole. Children under the age of 5 are treated for all pathologies in the health centres and are transferred to the general hospital if necessary
