2. For babies born in the midst of war in Gaza, life is a constant struggle for survival. We see it every day in the emergency room and pediatric intensive care unit of the Nasser hospital in southern Gaza.
3. In Nasser hospital, infections (44%), respiratory complications (31%) and meningitis (12%) are the main causes of neonatal hospitalization.
4. Being born in Gaza today means dealing day after day with a dreaded cycle of malnutrition, appalling air pollution and lack of vaccinations. Meanwhile, the upcoming winter threatens to worsen people’s health increasing the risk to develop skin, viral and respiratory infections, scabies and acute diarrhea.
5. “Severe malnutrition has started to appear in children. Some were born at the beginning of the war and needed nutrition during these months, but they did not receive the essential nutrients they needed.” Dr. Mohammad Abu Tayyem, MSF Paediatrician
6. Although we treat more than 300 children a day in Nasser hospital, outside, the vicious cycle complicates pediatric illnesses and diagnoses time and again.
7. The Israeli blockade of humanitarian aid, including life-saving supplies, directly and severely affects the health of thousands of children in Gaza. Even paracetamol and antibiotics are in short supply.
8. There is an urgent need for vital humanitarian aid and an immediate and permanent ceasefire.
