A day at Boost hospital

“It takes only a moment upon entering the hospital to understand the magnitude of medical needs in Helmand province. The facility is overwhelmed — not a day goes by when the beds aren’t fully occupied, often with two or even three children sharing a single bed.” Geremew Letta, MSF project coordinator.

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) has been supporting the 340-bed Boost provincial hospital hospital in Lashkar Gah since 2009. It is the MSF largest project in Afghanistan and the only facility capable of managing complex maternity and paediatric cases in a province that is home to around 1.5 million people.

To fully concentrate on improving quality of care for mothers and their children – they represent more than 70% of the admissions to Boost hospital – MSF has handed over the adult care departments and the emergency room to the Ministry of Public Health. MSF will be supporting the authorities with infrastructure (including building work), human resources, and medical supplies until May 2026, and remains committed to supporting the population in Helmand.
