One year of war in Gaza

A year has passed since the devastating war on Gaza started following the attacks by Hamas on 7 October 2023. resulted in over 41.500 Gazans killed, according to the Ministry of Health. People have at times lost their entire families, their homes and belongings, their livelihoods and sense of future, have witnessed and experienced an inhumane amount of violence and trauma, and have been displaced – often multiple times – as it has been the case for over 90% of the population. As each day passes without a sustained ceasefire, killings and suffering in the Gaza Strip continue.
Since the war began, MSF had to leave 14 health structures due to the extreme violence, destruction of health facilities and repeated violations of the medical humanitarian mission. Despite that, MSF staff have been continued to work relentlessly to provide care to a huge number of patients, including many children with burns and serious trauma injuries, women seeking for emergency maternal care, as well as diseases and infections linked to the unsanitary living conditions in displacement settings. MSF operations were conducted amid severe shortages of supplies and enormous logistical challenges. Six MSF staff were killed and 26 violent incidents, including airstrikes damaging hospitals, ground offensives into medical centers, or attacks on convoys, were reported.
For over 12 months, MSF has kept calling for the stopping of attacks on healthcare, medical staff and civilians and for the unhindered access and flow of humanitarian aid into and within Gaza. But without an immediate and sustained ceasefire, people will continue to be killed, injured, unable to access care, and receive life-saving humanitarian aid.
