Hepatitis E Vaccination in Bentiu: Effective results of the two doses research

Hepatitis E is a viral liver disease primarily transmitted through contaminated water and food, particularly affecting vulnerable populations like those in displacement camps with poor sanitation and limited water access.

South Sudan has experienced recurring hepatitis E outbreaks, as in Bentiu camp in 2022, home to over 100,000 internally displaced persons. While a Hecolin vaccine exists, its typical three-dose regimen presents challenges in emergency settings.

In the same year of 2022, a collaborative research effort, involving MSF, the South Sudanese Ministry of Health, the University of Geneva (UniGe), Hopitaux Universitaires Geneve (HUG), and Johns Hopkins University conducted a study during a vaccination campaign in Bentiu to assess the vaccine's effectiveness with a two-dose schedule.

This campaign was the world's first vaccination campaign for Hepatitis E during an active outbreak. The study, published on 8 January 2025 in The Lancet Infectious Diseases, confirmed the high effectiveness of a two-dose regimen.
