In Kyrgyzstan, we have a population of 7 million, and approximately 700 breast cases are registered annually.
This type of cancer ranks first, followed by cervical cancer, with over 600 cases.
What's most frustrating is that almost half of these, over 45% of cases, are detected in stage three and four.

Since 2021, MSF has been running a unique project in Kyrgyzstan, focusing on early detection of cervical and breast cancer.

To address the shortage of medical staff, the MSF Women's Health project has trained family nurses to conduct cervical and breast cancer screening.

This kind of screening was not previously done by nurses. It was only performed by gynecologists. Due to a shortage of doctors, nurses are now being trained. Here we study basic screening, the structure of the cervix and the female reproductive organs in general, we learn about HPV vaccination and how to perform a cervical exam.

The project has also addressed the existing obstacles in the community by empowering women to get screened.

The population, of course, initially responded with apprehension, and at the same time with interest. Our health care system emphasises a preventive approach.
It was something new, so there were a lot of questions such as: « Why is this screening being done? », « Why it is free? », « Does the project has a vested interest? ».
It took us a long time to explain [why things were done this way].
After the first women started coming for screening, word-of-mouth helped us a lot. Once their screening is done, women are asked to share their impressions and feelings.

As a nurse, I was not allowed to perform screenings.
I love screening and working with women in general. This training helped me. I got a certificate.

Within 2 years, MSF performed a total of 9,221 cervical cancer screenings and 6,379 breast cancer screenings.

Thanks to the very good collaboration we’ve had over the past three years, here in Kyrgyzstan — with the Minister of Health, with the World Health Organization, with all the different partners — I think it's very, very successful, knowing that when we are leaving from here, it will not collapse.
What's the most important thing. I think women here in Kyrgyzstan should benefit from this regular screening, and I hope that the Minister of Health, with the whole community and all the partners, will set up all the screening clinics in the country so that women can be screened on a regular basis, for cervical and breast cancer.

MSF hopes to increase women’s trust and knowledge about screening services, and ultimately reduce the risks of mortality caused by cancer in Kyrgyzstan.
