that’s why I decided to come here and help them.
Because of the rain and the flooding, I stayed at home.
Maybe I can go this evening.
But if this is not finished, maybe by Monday I can go to school.
You can see our life now, there’s no hope. Life is making us feel bad.

Aujourd’hui, c’est vendredi, je dois aller à l’école,
mais mes parents ont des soucis
donc j’ai décidé de les aider.
Je suis resté à la maison à cause des inondations.
J’essaierai d’aller à l’école ce soir,
et si ce n’est pas fini, j’irai lundi.

The Sudd region is one of the world's largest wetlands. Its inhabitants have adapted their lives to the natural ebb and flow of seasonal floods, which depend on rainfall patterns and water levels in upstream Lake Victoria, Uganda.
However in recent years extreme flooding has engulfed up to two-thirds of South Sudan.
In Old Fangak, only mud dykes protect the town's thousands of inhabitants from submersion.

La région du Sudd est l’une des plus grandes zones humides au monde. Ses habitants y vivent au rythme des inondations, qui varient en fonction des pluies et de la montée des eaux du Lac Victoria, situé en amont, en Ouganda.
Mais ces dernières années, des inondations extrêmes ont affecté le Soudan du Sud, submergeant jusqu’aux deux tiers du pays.
À Old Fangak, seules des digues faites de boue protègent les habitants de la submersion.

When I left my village, Buut,
it was completely destroyed.
We really tried, but the water levels rose every day, so we decided to come to the village of Chotbora.
We built a small house and stayed here.

Quand j’ai quitté mon village, Buut,
tout était détruit.
On a vraiment tout essayé, mais les eaux continuaient à monter chaque jour. On a décidé de partir pour le village de Chotbora.
On a construit une petite maison et on est resté ici.

When you live in the water, on a raft made of grass, you will definitely fall ill – even the kids will get sick.
Quand on vit dans l’eau, sur des herbes, on tombe forcément malade, même les enfants.

You start feeling unwell because of the water, your body starts swelling all over, you have pains in your joints every night, and in your stomach too, even the children.
On se sent mal à cause de l’eau, le corps commence à gonfler partout, on a mal aux articulations chaque nuit, à l’estomac aussi.

I have seven children, the youngest is a boy who was born here. I am still breastfeeding him.
J’ai sept enfants, le plus jeune est un garçon, il est né ici. Je l’allaite toujours.

To be honest, my life is really painful, because gathering waterlilies from the river is very difficult. We struggle to survive.
Honnêtement, ma vie est vraiment très dure, je dois ramasser des nénuphars dans la rivière, on se bat pour survivre.

You take a small piece of waterlily mixed with waterlily roots and you eat it.
Tu prends un petit morceau de nénuphar, tu le mélanges avec les racines et tu le manges.

Old Fangak is part of the Sudd swamp, which is a large body of water containing grasslands and marsh in different areas. It has greatly transformed over the past couple of years due to extreme flooding.
Old Fangak fait partie des marais du Sudd, une grande étendue d'eau avec des prairies et des marais. La zone s'est considérablement transformée au cours des deux dernières années à cause d'inondations extrêmes.

In Old Fangak, we're very close to the Nile River, on one of its tributaries.
À Old Fangak, nous sommes très proches du Nil et de l'un de ses affluents.

Increased rainfall, combined with the release of water coming from the Lake Victoria Basin in Uganda into the Nile, has lead to a lot of extreme flooding in previously flood-prone areas.
L'augmentation des précipitations, combinée au déversement de l’eau du lac Victoria, en Ouganda, dans le Nil, a entraîné des inondations extrêmes dans des zones déjà sujettes aux inondations.

So the seasonal flooding patterns, combined with different rainfall patterns, have contributed to more extreme flooding events in Old Fangak.

Since yesterday, when the rain started,
we have received a lot of people
from surrounding areas and villages.
Most of the houses on that side are now surrounded by water.
The only safe place for them is Old Fangak.
And even here, to accommodate more than five families, it's very difficult in terms of sanitation, in terms of shelters.
Il pleut depuis hier,
nous avons reçu beaucoup de personnes
des villages alentours.
La plupart des maisons de ce côté sont encerclées par l’eau.
Le seul endroit sûr pour ces personnes, c’est Old Fangak.
Et même ici, pour installer plus de cinq familles, c’est très difficile en termes d’assainissement et d’abris.

Most of the people ran out from Bentiu because of the war. They were affected by war and they ran here.
La plupart des gens qui ont fui Bentiu à cause de la guerre se sont réfugiés ici.

From Malakal, Upper Nile, they also came here when the war broke out. Because they see the safe place is Old Fangak. And, years later, some of them didn't go back; they are still here with us.
Ils sont aussi venus de Malakal, dans l’État du Nil Supérieur, lorsque la guerre a éclaté. Ils savent que c’est un lieu sûr. Et des années plus tard, certains sont toujours avec nous et ne sont pas repartis.

This place, before the floods of 2019, 2020, 2021, from here to there, it was very dry. So the kids were playing football there and there was no water. Now, you can’t even walk, you have to use a canoe.
Cet endroit, avant les inondations de 2019, 2020, 2021, d’ici jusqu’à là-bas, c’était sec. Les enfants jouaient au foot là et il n’y avait pas d’eau. Maintenant, on ne peut même pas marcher, on doit utiliser un canoë.

Because of the water increasing, you see, the level of water is rising but the community is still working on dykes, just to rebuild the broken parts.
The only thing they need is plastic sheeting to protect. If they put the plastic sheeting on, it can also protect the mud. Now you see there, because there is no protection, you see the mud is collapsing.

À cause du niveau de l’eau qui monte, la communauté répare les digues pour reconstruire les parties endommagées.
Ils ont besoin de bâches en plastique pour les protéger. S’ils mettent les bâches, ça protège la boue. Vous voyez ici, parce qu’il n’y a pas de protection, on peut voir la digue s’effondrer.

It's certainly possible that the extreme weather we're seeing could be related to changes in our climate happening in South Sudan.

And so, as an epidemiologist, things that we might see that are related to climate are exacerbations of these issues, like malnutrition, waterborne illnesses, hepatitis E, vector-borne illnesses like malaria, which has a relationship to both temperature and water, based on the parasite and the vector.

En tant qu'épidémiologiste, on peut observer que certaines pathologies s’intensifient, comme la malnutrition, les maladies transmises par l'eau, l'hépatite E, les maladies à transmission vectorielle comme le paludisme, qui est lié à la fois à la température et à l'eau, en fonction du parasite et du vecteur.

She fell sick when I was breastfeeding her. The type of food I eat is not very good, sometimes we don’t eat because we are not at home.
Je l’allaitais encore quand elle est tombée malade. La nourriture que je mange n’est pas très bonne, parfois nous ne mangeons pas parce que nous ne sommes pas à la maison.

Sometimes we cook local food and sometimes fish soup and that’s all.
Parfois on cuisine de la nourriture locale et parfois juste de la soupe de poissons.

It’s very hard to get food. When we don’t get it, we go to bed hungry.
C’est très difficile de trouver de la nourriture. Quand on n’en trouve pas, on dort le ventre vide.

Before the flooding, things were going very well: people were growing crops and they provided for themselves. When they couldn’t cultivate the land, the UN was providing for us.
Avant les inondations, ça allait bien, les gens pouvaient cultiver et ça leur suffisait. Quand ils ne pouvaient pas cultiver leurs terres, les Nations Unies leur fournissaient de la nourriture.

The kids are not healthy and there is no food to eat. As a mother, you can’t sit and watch your kids starve to death.
Les enfants ne sont pas en bonne santé et il n’y a rien à manger. Je suis une mère, je ne peux pas rester assise et regarder mes enfants mourir de faim.

So you go in the river and start looking for waterlilies to feed the kids and, in the process, you fall sick and it spreads to your children…
Donc on va dans la rivière chercher des nénuphars pour nourrir nos enfants, on tombe malade et les enfants aussi…

I came here by canoe
from very far, it took four hours.
I grow these vegetables in my village.
The seeds were given to me by another organization.
We cook it and we eat it.
We also eat waterlilies, there is no dura [sorghum].

Je suis venue de très loin avec un canoë,
ça a pris quatre heures.
Je fais pousser ces légumes dans mon village.
Une autre organisation me donne les graines.
On les cuisine et on les mange.
On mange aussi des nénuphars, il n’y a pas de sorgho.

It's called beel [grain] in our language, in Nuer, and we travel up to Sudan to get it.
On appelle ça le beel en Nuer, c’est du grain, on va au Soudan pour en avoir.

I personally go there to get it. I get the money to buy it, I invest and then I have to sell it.
When you have a cow, you just have to sell it and start a business.
We used to grow beel and harvest it in our farm before the flooding came to our land.
And now getting it is very difficult, the Sudanese traders smuggle it to our soil and it’s very expensive.
J’y vais moi-même, j’ai de l’argent pour en acheter, j’investis et ensuite je le revends.
Quand tu as une vache, il suffit de la vendre et de monter un petit commerce.
On faisait pousser du beel dans notre ferme avant les inondations.
C’est devenu très difficile d’en trouver, les commerçants soudanais le font passer en contrebande ici et c’est très cher.

We used to have cattle, goats, enough land to cultivate food but they are no more because the water took our lives.
And now the flooding has completely destroyed our properties, killed our cattle, killed our goats and also prevented us from cultivating the land.
None of that is available anymore. Water also chased me away from my home, my house is currently in the middle of the water.
On avait du bétail, des chèvres, assez de terres pour nous nourrir mais il n’y a plus rien, l’eau a pris nos vies.
Les inondations ont complètement détruit nos biens, tué le bétail, les chèvres et nous empêchent de cultiver nos champs.
Tout ça n’est plus possible. L’eau m’a chassé de chez moi, ma maison est inondée maintenant.

South Sudan is heavily dependent on external aid, more than 80 per cent of the healthcare system is funded either by donors or by external humanitarian actors and other health actors such as MSF.
Le Soudan du Sud dépend fortement de l'aide extérieure, plus de 80 % du système de santé est financé soit par des donateurs, soit par des acteurs humanitaires comme MSF.

We're seeing funding cuts all through, like in food distribution, for example [funding] for WFP has massively gone down for the country, leaving lots of people in the country without access to food assistance or very limited food assistance. And for areas like Old Fangak, which are very remote to access, we also know that the challenges are not just in terms of accessibility, but with such populations being unable to farm due to the climatic shocks they're facing.
On observe des baisses de financement dans tous les domaines, comme la distribution de nourriture, par exemple [l’aide du] PAM a massivement diminué dans le pays, laissant de nombreuses personnes sans accès à l'aide alimentaire ou à une aide alimentaire très limitée. Et pour des régions comme Old Fangak, qui sont très reculées, il ne s’agit pas que d’une question d’accès, c’est aussi parce que ces populations ne peuvent pas cultiver leurs terres à cause des chocs climatiques auxquels elles sont confrontées.

Most of Jonglei state is in the flooded area.
We have our outreach mobile clinic in Haat.
Haat is three and a half to four hours from Old Fangak.
La majeure partie de l'État de Jonglei se trouve dans une zone inondée.

Haat est à trois heures et demie, quatre heures d'Old Fangak.

So these [villages] are all very far away. There are no health facilities or health services anywhere.
Ces villages sont tous très éloignés. Il n’y a pas de structures ou de services de santé ici.

There are five islands where we go with our mobile clinic.
We do this every two weeks.
On va sur cinq îles avec notre clinique mobile.
On y va toutes les deux semaines.

Some [patients] have to travel for 2 hours, 3 hours. So it's really complicated for them to reach us and get health services.
Certains patients mettent deux ou trois heures pour venir. C’est très compliqué pour eux d’accéder aux soins.

For 4 to 5 years, since the flooding, boats have been necessary.
No cars, no bicycles, no motorbikes, nothing.
Depuis 4 ou 5 ans, depuis les inondations, les bateaux sont nécessaires.
Pas de voiture, pas de vélo, pas de moto, rien du tout.

This is the consultation table. Simon is a clinical officer with MSF.
This is the vaccinator. He vaccinates all the children from 0 to 5 years, depending on which antigen is prescribed. We have all antigens from BCG to measles.
The midwife is there. She sees all antenatal cases and postnatal cases up to 6 months.
Today is going to be a rainy day. So maybe if it starts raining, they will have to vacate their tukuls for us.
C’est ici que se font les consultations. Voici Simon, il travaille avec MSF.
C’est la personne qui va faire les vaccinations. Il vaccine tous les enfants de 0 à 5 ans, en fonction de l'antigène prescrit. Nous avons tous les antigènes, du BCG à la rougeole.
La sage-femme est là. Elle s'occupe de tous les cas prénatals et postnatals jusqu'à 6 mois.

Many people will be cut off from accessing the hospital because of too much flooding and then there'll be an increase of morbidity.
Beaucoup de gens risquent de ne plus pouvoir accéder à l’hôpital à cause des inondations et il y a un risque d’augmentation de la morbidité.

Malaria is one of them and skin diseases, which are related to this kind of environment where children are playing everywhere and they get infected. Bloody and watery diarrhoea are increasing.
Le paludisme en fait partie comme les problèmes de peau, qui sont liés à l’environnement : il y a des enfants qui jouent partout et qui tombent malades. Les diarrhées aqueuses et sanglantes augmentent aussi.

We received a few cases of hepatitis E positive pregnant [women]. They were very, very sick and we lost two [of them] because they were not vaccinated.
Nous avons reçu plusieurs femmes enceintes qui avaient l’hépatite E. Elles étaient très, très malades et deux sont mortes parce qu’elles n’étaient pas vaccinées.

This is another fear that the rain could bring. Coupled with hunger, it will be worse.
But in areas where vaccination was done, the symptoms are much lighter.
MSF teams are doing the third round.
Ça fait partie de nos inquiétudes concernant les pluies. Avec la faim en plus, la situation risque d’empirer.
Mais dans les zones où la vaccination a été effectuée, les symptômes sont beaucoup plus légers.

Usually it is very difficult to find your way from Old Fangak to Paguir. Normally, on a good day, sometimes you just take 45 minutes. But this time, we are sure that it is going to be difficult with grasses on the road, and they clog the propeller.
C’est toujours difficile de trouver son chemin entre Old Fangak et Paguir. Normalement, les bons jours, ça prend seulement 45 minutes. Mais aujourd’hui, on peut être certain que ce sera difficile avec les herbes sur la route, qui bloquent l'hélice.

Most of the drivers know the way. So they try the ways they know. If it doesn't work, they come back and then try another road. There will always be some alternatives to keep trying. If you see that it is completely blocked with grass and you can't access it, then you come back and try another option.
La plupart des conducteurs connaissent le chemin. Ils essaient les chemins qu'ils connaissent. Si ça ne passe pas, ils font marche arrière et essaient une autre route. Il y aura toujours des alternatives à essayer. Si on voit que le chemin est complètement bloqué par les herbes, on essaie ailleurs.

We need to get vaccinated for hepatitis E. We heard that it’s very scary.
Il faut qu’on se fasse vacciner contre l’hépatite E. Il paraît que ça fait très peur.

If the water reaches us here, in our home and the entire high land, we really have no way to protect ourselves.
Si l’eau vient jusqu’ici, dans notre maison et sur les terres plus hautes, alors nous n’aurons plus aucun moyen de nous protéger.

The only way is to use a traditional method of constructing a dyke to stop the water. When I was in my village things were hard and we came here.
Le seul moyen sera de construire une digue pour arrêter l’eau. Quand j’étais dans mon village, c’était très dur, c’est pourquoi nous sommes venus ici.

I wish there was a place [we could go], because we would be long gone, and the kids would be able to go to school and life would be better.
J’aimerais qu’il existe un endroit où l’on puisse aller, on y serait depuis longtemps, les enfants pourraient aller à l’école et tout irait mieux.

We are powerless, we don’t even know what to eat, we can’t think about a better future and a better life.
On est impuissant, on ne sait même pas quoi manger, on n’arrive même pas à penser à un meilleur avenir ou à une meilleure vie.

This documentary was filmed in July 2024. Since then, heavier rainfall and higher river levels have occurred, submerging many of the villages surrounding Old Fangak. MSF teams have been assisting Old Fangak's inhabitants in raising and reinforcing the dykes, while at the same time treating an increasing number of patients at the hospital. MSF outreach teams have also been seeing worrying signs of malnutrition among children in the surrounding villages.

Ce documentaire a été tourné en juillet 2024. Depuis, le niveau élevé des rivières et des précipitations torrentielles ont submergé la plupart des villages situés autour d’Old Fangak.
Les équipes de MSF aident les habitants de la ville à élever et à renforcer les digues. Elles soignent également un nombre croissant de patients, en particulier des enfants souffrant de malnutrition.

It happened long ago, before you were even born. It was so devastating that we could only survive by staying on floating rafts made of tied grass.

It is really difficult to stay in this water, that's why we started working on this dyke with these young men.

We are not going to leave this village.
This is the only home we have, if people see us suffering, they can help us here.
On ne va pas quitter notre village.
