I took this photo just after we arrived to Tawila last October. We were heading to the edge of the town, which is controlled by a rebel groupwhich is currently not taking an active role in the fighting, and which had facilitated arrivals of displaced peopleThe displaced were fleeing El Fasher, about two hours away by road. That city has been under siege for about a year by the Rapid Support Forces.

TEXT ON SCREEN: Since April 2023, the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces has plunged Sudan into an unprecedented humanitarian crisis. Twelve million people have been displaced over the last two years .

They came by any means they could — the wealthier in cars, the poorest on foot, sometimes walking for hours or even two days. Many were escaping El Fasher, but the displacement phenomenon in this war in Sudan is massive. It’s considered to be the largest displacement crisis in the world, with over ten million people displaced within Sudan, and over two million who fled to neighboring countries.

Even though Sudan has a long history of conflict-related displacement, we’ve never seen anything like this.
