Additional Information / Shotlist Kutupalong refugee camp with more than one million refugees, is the world's largest refugee camp. Divided into many camp sections that are right next to each other, Kutupalong is located in the South of Bangladesh, close to the border to Myanmar. The camp was established informally in 1991, after thousands of Rohingyas fled from Myanmar. In August 2017, as the violence against the Rohingya escalated to extreme levels in Myanmar, hundreds of thousands of Rohingya fled to Bangladesh. Since this exodus, still people cross the border to seek safety in Bangladesh. By 2025 more than one Million people live inside the camps on only 24 square kilometers. This is roughly equivalent to the size of Frankfurt Airport in Germany. The people live in small makeshift shelters. In the camps they are exposed to climate induced disasters, such as floodings, landslides and heat, and other dangers like fires, causing deaths and injuries. Since mid-2022 there has been a significant increase in violence inside the camps. There is almost no access to employment, education, or livelihood opportunities. The Rohingyas in the camp depend on humanitarian aid. The living conditions make people sick. As the biggest health actor in the camps for eight years now, MSF is offering emergency care for trauma patients, mental health, sexual and reproductive health care and treatment of chronic diseases such as diabetes and hypertension. Recently the organization expanded its hepatitis C response. MSF also provides key support for water and sanitation activities in the camps.
