Additional Information / Shotlist The increased violence by rogue armed groups (so-called bandits), has over the past two years forced villagers to desert their farms and grazing lands and be displaced in towns of Zamfara state where MSF teams work, or be stuck in villages with difficulty to travel the insecure roads to seek support.
As a result, the humanitarian and health situation in Zamfara has reached a critical crisis stage due to food shortage and interruption of health services. MSF teams in Zamfara are seeing an alarmingly high number of children with severe acute malnutrition, measles, malaria and watery diarrhea in the hospitals that MSF teams are running in Zamfara State; and they keep presenting in an advanced condition to our hospitals every day.
MSF is one of the very few organizations working in the Northwest of Nigeria. The scarcity of aid organizations in the area is leaving tremendous humanitarian unmet and urgent needs. MSF has worked in in Anka, since 2010 and, since 2019, is responding to the health and humanitarian needs in Shinkafi and Zurmi, also in Zamfara state, supporting hospitals there.
