IN 00:02 After more than three weeks of prolonged detention, the Geo Barents has been formally released. 00.06 OUT

IN 00.06 While we are relieved, we however cannot celebrate. 00.08 OUT

IN 00.09 While port state controls are legitimate maritime procedures, 00:13 developed to ensure the safety of navigation at sea, 00:16 the current regulations are providing space for questionable decision making 00:20 and therefore can be easily instrumentalised by state authorities to target NGO ships in a discriminatory way 00:28 and overly punitive practice, in order to prevent NGOs from saving lives at sea. 00.33 OUT

IN 00.34 We do not believe our ship’s detention was consistently grounded in relevant maritime regulations. 00.39 OUT

IN 00.40 The interpretation of maritime law used by the Italian authorities compromises rescue obligations at sea. 00.46 OUT

IN 00.46 Since our presence in the central Mediterranean is the direct result of the progressive and shameful disengagement 00: 54 of European state-led proactive search and rescue naval capacity in the Mediterranean sea, 00:59 it is therefore unacceptable that NGOs filling this gap are prevented from saving lives and get detained. 01.07 OUT

IN 01.08 The death toll is increasing by the day and lives continue to be needlessly lost in the Mediterranean. 01.14 OUT

IN 01.15 In the first six months of 2021 up to now, at least 930 people have lost their lives – a three-fold increase compared to the same period in 2020. 01.25 OUT

IN 01.26 We are getting ready to go back as soon as possible to the Search and Rescue zone to continue saving lives at sea and alerting on this deadly sea border. 01.37 OUT
