Nine-year-old Bibi Fazlia and her father Hamdullah on the female inpatient ward at the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) hospital in Kandahar city, Kandahar Province, Afghanistan.

Bibi Fazlia came to the hospital with her mother and father. She went to a private hospital in Lashkar Gah city, Helmand, which conducted tests before sending her to Kandahar Mirwais Regional Hospital where she was admitted for one month before being referred to the Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB) hospital in Kandahar city for treatment. She has been receiving treatment here for 18 months on an individualized regimen instead of the normal 9-month regimen.

Additional Information / Shotlist MSF works in partnership with the Ministry of Public Health to diagnose and treat patients with drug-resistant tuberculosis (DR-TB). The project aims to ensure patients with TB have access to quality, free and effective treatment. In April 2021, MSF inaugurated the hospital, which includes a laboratory, outpatient clinic and 24-beds for inpatients suffering from DR-TB and comorbidities, and those who develop severe side effects after taking DR-TB medication. MSF also provides mental health support and undertakes health promotion activities in the hospital.
