Things are improving step by step. Because what Mosul has been through is not simple. I don’t think that any other city has experienced that.

There is no magical solution to fix everything quickly.

Five years have passed since the battle to retake Mosul from the Islamic State Group ended. But Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, and its people are still recovering from the trauma. This nine-months-long war wounded and killed thousands of the city’s residents and displaced more than a million. This remains one of the deadliest urban battles since the Second World War.

Life has changed since the end of the war. There were many crises in Mosul, but we were able to overcome them little by little as security improved in the governorate.

The best example is the roads. West Mosul was not connected to East Mosul.

There was only one bridge for people to use and it was completely congested.

In terms of economic development, you see that Mosul is really coming to life again. There is a lot of small economic, small activities going on. There is a lot of cultural activities that are also starting up again. And I think that the people from Mosul, they really need that, and they want that as well. They are very resilient, and they are looking for options and possibilities to work together for a better future.

It's very interesting and satisfying also to actually see that there is a positive development that the city and the country are building up. And I wish that this is going to continue and hopefully also picking up speed more and more as we go.

But because healthcare facilities were heavily damaged during the war, people still struggle to access affordable high-quality healthcare. The main hospitals of the city have reopened in temporary structures, but the healthcare system is still far from what it used to be. In its three hospitals, MSF teams receive a large number of patients coming to seek maternity care, paediatric care, emergency care or surgical care.

I went through a very complicated time after being injured.

Before my injury I could work and move on my own, then all of a sudden, I fell to the ground. For two years I had suicidal thoughts because of all these surgeries and treatments. But when I started to receive a proper care, I started getting better. There’s a big difference between moving with a wheelchair and walking now.

Even if things are getting better in Mosul, the heavy toll of the war for both the city and its people is still evident.
There is still a long way to go before a full recovery
Mosul needs support and will need it for years to come.

People from Mosul always tell me and explain on how beautiful the city was and how interesting it was with all the archaeological history of the city. And I think it deserves to come to life again in that way. And I hope to be able to see that.
