Five years have passed since the battle to retake Mosul from the Islamic State Group ended. But Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, and its people are still recovering from the trauma. This nine-months-long war wounded and killed thousands of the city’s residents and displaced more than a million.
Gradually, barriers and checkpoints were removed, places and bridges reopened.
Today, the people of Mosul are working together to bring life back to their city

But because healthcare facilities were heavily damaged during the war, people still struggle to access affordable high-quality healthcare. The main hospitals of the city have reopened in temporary structures, but the healthcare system is still far from what it used to be. In its three hospitals, MSF teams receive a large number of patients coming to seek maternity care, paediatric care, emergency care or surgical care.

For two years I had suicidal thoughts because of all these surgeries and treatments. But when I started to receive a proper care, I started getting better. There’s a big difference between moving with a wheelchair and walking now.

There is still a long way to go before a full recovery
Mosul needs support and will need it for years to come.
