But prevalence of cervical cancer is likely much higher.
Many learn of the diagnosis at a late stage, dramatically reducing their chances of survival.
Yet cervical cancer—if detected early—is preventable.

In Kyrgyzstan’s Sokuluk district,
MSF has launched a new cervical cancer prevention programme in collaboration with the Ministry of Health.
Sokuluk is one of the most populated districts in Kyrgyzstan.
The district is home to many internally displaced people and migrant workers, who struggle to pay for specialized treatment.

The programme will screen and treat 60,000 women over the next three years.
By detecting cancer early, the programme will improve chances of survival and ensure timely access to treatment

Health promotion is critical to the success of the prevention programme.
MSF health promotion teams have been visiting villages in the district to raise awareness of the need for check-up.

At first we’ve did an assessment to know how women access gynecological care.

Arakan Toktorbayeva is one of the very first woman who was screened for cervical cancer in Djani Djer hospital in Sokuluk.
I learnt about it (screening services) yesterday through WhatsApp.
There was a general information about the program that all women should come and get screened for women’s health issues.
I didn’t know anything about cervical cancer, this is my voluntary visit for the first time.
The screening programme aims to be a model for scaling up prevention and treatment of cervical cancer across Kyrgyzstan.
Along with HPV vaccination, early detection and treatment will be key to prevention efforts.
