My name is Munya Makari. I've been with MSF since June 2009. Worked in Zimbabwe, in Murimba project. Health promotion now it's really at the centre of it with community engagement because really, this is how we got to track the rumours of what is happening. It can be rumours about security, it can be rumours about diseases, misinformation about conditions. So, we needed to keep track of these issues.

Munya has worked in conflict zones where community engagement and health promotion play a role in helping projects understand the needs of those affected by conflict.

In terms of security, health promotion worked a lot to support the Ops department [Operations department], the PC [Project Coordinator], in terms of situation analysis and contextual assessments.

so we would engage with community leadership, they would tell us what is happening, the dynamics at community where the clashes are happening, potential clashes that are going to happen and we would feed back this information to the PC and he would then make follow up to validate this information and execute decisions in terms of making sure our team is safe.

We need to depart from the paternalistic approach to patient care, we really need to understand and develop our strategies that are need-responsive, impactful, but based on good assessment, and who does this assessment? It’s our network at community level, under the leadership of HP manager and really to follow every tiny detail because for us, no information is useless.

Some of the information is really to do with perception of community and we develop messages to address the concerns, the frequently asked questions, the misinformation that are there so that the perception about our care is good because this is everything, you know, confidence in our services by the communities is everything is paramount is of paramount importance. So, we work a lot, we invest a lot in that. It also speaks to our core values. We want responsible compassionate and, and accountable care.
