Additional Information / Shotlist In 2017-2021, Minsk was one of the seven sites of the MSF-led TB-PRACTECAL clinical trial that was aimed at identifying new treatment regimens for patients with multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB). In 2021, the phase II/III TB-PRACTECAL trial from Belarus, Uzbekistan and South Africa found that the new, shorter treatment regimens were very effective: 89 per cent of patients in the group with the new drug regimens were cured compared to 52 per cent of patients on standard treatment regimens. Furthermore, the trial showed that patients experienced significantly fewer side effects from the newer drugs. In Belarus, the TB-PRACTECAL clinical trial is followed by the new pioneering SMARRTT operational research, which is scheduled to be implemented in 2022-2024. The SMARRTT is a six-month only all-oral treatment for patients with MDR/RR-TB from all over Belarus. The recruitment progress is ongoing, with 200 patients already enrolled into the pioneering operational research. The SMARRTT is implemented by MSF in partnership with the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Pulmonology and TB of Belarus.
