In Rutshuru territory, the situation remains highly tense and volatile following the resurgence of the M23 armed group and the violent clashes that took place with the Congolese army since the end of March 2022.

Over 190,000 people were forced to flee their homes since end of March, 2022, according to OCHA’s recent estimations in both Rutshuru and Nyiragongo territories.

As the crisis drags on, the hope of returning soon for the displaced people is diminishing.

The security situation in Rwanguba has deteriorated. The population moved towards Rutshuru to seek refuge. MSF withdrew from the Rwanguba health zone as the fighting continued to escalate. There are a lot of displaced people who are stuck in Rwanguba but we don't have access to them because of the insecurity. MSF continues to care for displaced people in the center of Rutshuru by setting up mobile clinics and supporting certain health structures.

In the four sites supported in and around Rutshuru, MSF carries out an average of 500 consultations per day.

And the 3 major morbidities that we see are malaria, pneumonia, and also digestive pathologies like diarrhea.

MSF has set up a mobile clinic at the stadium in Rutshuru where more than 1400 families are gathered.

The number of displaced people is so huge and there are not enough tents to accommodate all of them. There are many needs that are not 100% met, including food. I think there is a big problem with nutrition. I think it would take a lot of assistance, whether it's healthcare, food, WASH [water and sanitation]. This would prevent many of the contagious pathologies that we are currently monitoring.
