Four months after a convoy of vehicles belonging to international medical organisation Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) came under fire by unidentified armed men in Ituri province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), MSF has announced that it will close its projects in Nizi and Bambu due to a lack of security guarantees from all parties to the conflict. Two MSF staff were severely wounded in the attack, which took place on 28 October 2021 on the road between Kobu and Bambu in Ituri province’s Djugu territory.

Additional Information / Shotlist On March 23rd,
due to the growing insecurity in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC),
MSF activities have been suspended throughout the country, except for life-saving emergencies, as a sign of solidarity with our colleagues and the affected populations in Ituri.

It is with great reluctance that we are taking such a decision.

If today we are forced to close a project, it’s because unfortunately
the security conditions are not guaranteed, are not sufficient,
to be able to work in this area.

In the province of Ituri, DRC,as a result of the inter-community conflict,
the population lives in a violent and insecure context.

These families need urgent humanitarian assistance
but the situation is so violent that the aid
cannot stay on site.

MSF has been working in Ituri province for several years.

MSF teams have provided medical care to local and
displaced people affected by the conflict.

We are aware that the closure of this project will certainly have consequences.

What is important to us,
is that all actors of the conflict in Ituri respect the medical mission of Médecins Sans Frontières, respect humanitarian law.

Despite the closure of the projects in Nizi and Bambu,
MSF remains active in other parts of Ituri,
including in Drodro, in Rhoe camp
and in the Mahagi Territory.
