We started mapping in the South of Madagascar in March 2021 in support of developing humanitarian activities.

As the first team of Médecins Sans Frontières on the ground assessed needs, they witnessed an exceptionally severe malnutrition crisis.

Many villages and households in rural areas were hard to reach and missing from the maps.

So using GIS and the Missing Maps data, we can help improve the situation.

TEXT:

First, volunteers marked the tiles with buildings in the Mapswipe app.
This helped to reduce the vast area.

With the results, the Missing Maps team set up mapping projects on the HOT Tasking Manager.

We mapped the regions affected by the crisis at several mapathons.

In total, 1102 volunteers added over 324,000 buildings and hundreds of villages to the OpenStreetMap (OSM).

So, we were in the village the other day and you can see the buildings that we passed.

And when we have all the buildings downloaded for a large area

then we can go and do an analysis of the density of the buildings

to show where people are and also give us an idea of the density of a population.

Then we can determine how far they are from health facilities, or water points.

Our field teams used the OSM data for water and sanitation activities; to see where to go next, to explore if there is water or not, and to navigate.
